"Art Museums and Education" Article

I always thought museums' primary function was to preserve the artists' work inside so that others may enjoy it. I have often thought about form vs. function when visiting museums, especially art museums. There is obviously a limited amount of space available in each location for each work. However, according to Goodman, each work should have its own room so as not to be influenced by the other works or their meanings/messages. The museum's main function is the "...prevention and cure of blindness in order to make works work." I think, though, that certain works may benefit from context: That is, I don't necessarily think that Monet would suffer from the work of other Impressionist painters in the same room. These paintings could add meaning, creating more "work" for the works. I don't think this is true in all cases, but it may limit the prior experience that Goodman discusses. The combinations, when properly done, may also help alleviate the "blindness" by providing more insight to a particular era or theme.

  1. I agree that artwork can't really be as extremely separated as Goodman suggests... what a HUGE museum that would have to be!
